Questions to Ask Before You Book an Umrah Package

A checklist for comparing Umrah agencies in the UK and protecting your money: ATOL, named hotels, written terms and how to pay safely.

Questions to Ask Before You Book an Umrah Package

Most Umrah agencies in the UK are honest, but every year some pilgrims lose money to unprotected bookings or packages that are not what they seemed. These questions help you compare offers and book with confidence.

1. Will I receive an ATOL Certificate?

Any package that includes a flight should be ATOL protected. The company must either hold its own ATOL licence or sell as an agent of an ATOL holder, and you should receive an ATOL Certificate when you pay. If you do not receive one, your booking is not ATOL protected. You can check an ATOL number on the Civil Aviation Authority website.

2. Which hotels exactly, and how far from the Haram?

Ask for the hotel names and the walking distance or shuttle details. "Near the Haram" can mean anything from 100 metres to 2 kilometres.

3. What is included, and what is not?

Check flights, baggage, the visa, transfers, the train or coach to Madinah, meals and Ziyarat. Advertised prices should include every unavoidable charge.

4. What are the payment and cancellation terms?

Ask for the deposit, the balance date and the cancellation charges in writing before you pay anything.

5. How can I pay safely?

Pay by card or by bank transfer to a business account in the company's name, and keep every receipt. Paying part of the cost by credit card can give you extra protection under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. Be wary of anyone who asks for cash only.

6. Who do I call while I am away?

Make sure there is a phone or WhatsApp number that will be answered while you are in Saudi Arabia.

Warning signs

  • Prices far below everyone else, especially for Ramadan.
  • No company details, address or registration number.
  • Pressure to pay immediately in cash or to a personal account.
  • No written confirmation of hotels and flights.

If you think you have been targeted by a travel scam, report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or at actionfraud.police.uk.

Quick answers

How do I check an ATOL number?

You can check an ATOL number on the Civil Aviation Authority website. The ATOL Certificate you receive should show the ATOL holder and what is protected.

Is paying by credit card safer?

Paying at least part of the cost by credit card can give you extra protection under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act for purchases between £100 and £30,000.
